Walder Frey, nicknamed Big Walder, is the son of Ser Jammos Frey and Sallei Paege.[6] His personal coat of arms, depicted on his shield and surcoat, quarters the twin towers of House Frey with the tree and ravens of House Blackwood and the twining snakes of House Paege.[7]
Appearance and Character

Walder is a small and skinny fox-faced lad.[8] He is known as "Big Walder" because he is fifty-two days older than his cousin, "Little Walder" Frey, although Little Walder has since grown half a foot taller and is more stout.[9]
Big Walder's lambswool doublet is silver-grey with dark blue trim.[10] His armor is fine silver plate with enameled blue chasings. Walder's crest is shaped like a castle and he rides a dappled grey courser.[7]
The astute[11] Big Walder is more cautious[7] and less mean[12] than his cousin, Little Walder.
History
[edit]Lord Walder Frey hoped to foster Little Walder and another of his grandsons (possibly Big Walder) at court in King's Landing in return for fostering Robert Arryn at the Twins, but Lysa Arryn refused and Lord Jon Arryn declined the suggestion.[13]
Recent Events
[edit]A Game of Thrones
[edit]Walder is present at the Twins when Catelyn Stark comes to treat with Lord Walder Frey. As part of the terms allowing Robb Stark to cross at the Twins, Big Walder and his cousin, Little Walder, are sent to Winterfell to be fostered.[13]
A Clash of Kings
[edit]Big Walder and Little Walder are sent to Winterfell to become wards of Catelyn Stark. The cousins are tutored by Maester Luwin.[14] Big Walder makes friends with Rickon Stark, but is not friendly with Bran Stark.[9] The children play monsters and maidens, rats and cats, come-into-my-castle, and lord of the crossing.[9] Rickon angers Bran by showing the Freys the crypts of Winterfell.[9]
Big Walder trains with squires from White Harbor during the harvest feast; Bran thinks that Big Walder rides his horse better than Little Walder.[7] Big Walder apologizes to Luwin after the cousins make fun of Hodor.[7] Bran sends buttered turnips to Big Walder during the celebratory meal.[15]
When word of Ser Stevron Frey's death at Oxcross arrives at Winterfell, the Walders argue over who is next in line to inherit the Twins, showing no sadness at their relative's passing.[11]
The Frey cousins are taken captive by Theon Greyjoy when he leads his ironborn in capturing Winterfell. One of the cousins volunteers for Theon's party that searches the wolfswood for Bran and Rickon when they disappear from the castle. Although Theon does not identify which one, the boy's diction is similar to Little Walder's.[16]
The Freys are spared by Ramsay Snow during the sack of Winterfell.[17]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]A letter written by Big Walder and signed by both Frey cousins is sent to the Twins claiming Theon Greyjoy burned Winterfell. Lame Lothar Frey conveys this false report to Robb Stark, now King in the North.[18]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]Big Walder has become a squire to Ramsay.[19]
A Dance with Dragons
[edit]Big Walder and Little Walder bring Theon Greyjoy, who has been mutilated by Ramsay Bolton, from the Dreadfort's dungeon to Ramsay's feast with Arnolf Karstark and Hother Umber.[10]
The Frey cousins are with Ramsay at the siege of Moat Cailin.[20]
Lady Barbrey Dustin gives grey colts to Big Walder and Little Walder when they join Ramsay in searching for missing Freys near Barrowtown.[12] Big Walder is disturbed serving Ramsay and is also apprehensive when he sees Little Walder become more and more like Ramsay. Big Walder rarely takes part in his cousin's games or cruelties.[12] When a feast is held by Lord Harwood Stout, Little Walder pours wine for Ramsay while Big Walder attends to other guests.[12]
Big Walder attends the wedding of Ramsay and "Arya Stark" in the godswood of Winterfell, and the mists make the boy resemble a fox to Theon.[21]
After Little Walder is found murdered and frozen in a snowbank near the First Keep, a blood-spattered Big Walder accompanies Ser Hosteen Frey and his soldiers when they enter the Great Hall of Winterfell. Big Walder claims that before his death Little Walder was searching for a White Harbor man who owed him silver from a dice game Little Walder won.[8]
