Prince Daeron Targaryen, sometimes referred to as Daeron the Drunken, was the eldest son of King Maekar I Targaryen and his wife Dyanna Dayne.[3] Daeron was one of the rare Targaryens who had prophetic dragon dreams.[4]
In the television adaptation A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Daeron is portrayed by Henry Ashton.[5]
Appearance and Character
Daeron was a thin man with pale sandy brown hair. His beard stubble was blond-colored. He had a fine damask mantle and a red-and-black doublet. When Daeron was in his cups, his clothes could be stained with wine, his hair might be a rat's nest, and his face looked sallow and unhealthy. Even when he was sober, his eyes were often bloodshot, and his hands shook.[4]
Oft drunk, Daeron was not much of a knight, disliking horses and swords. In combat, he wore a green silk plume attached to his helm, and rode a bay destrier that was armored in overlapping black and gold scales.[4]
History
Youth
Daeron was born the eldest child of Prince Maekar Targaryen and his wife, Lady Dyanna Dayne. He was named after his grandfather, King Daeron II Targaryen.[4] He had three younger brothers, Aerion, Aemon, and Aegon, and two younger sisters, Daella and Rhae.[3] Daeron and his three younger brothers were all given dragon eggs when they were young.[6]
Tourney at Ashford Meadow
In 209 AC, Prince Maekar Targaryen sent his sons, Daeron and Aegon, from Summerhall to the tourney at Ashford Meadow, hoping they would outshine the sons of his brother, Prince Baelor Breakspear. However, as he was uninterested in participating in the tourney, Daeron stole away from his escort, taking his squire Aegon with him. Daeron could go incognito with his "common" hair color, but he shaved Aegon's head to hide his Targaryen silver-gold hair. While drinking at an inn near Ashford, Daeron encountered Dunk, and told him he had dreamed of him, ordering Dunk to stay away from him. Aegon, who wanted to participate in the tourney, stayed incognito as "Egg", and asked Dunk if he could be his squire. Though Dunk denied him then, Aegon left the inn and followed him to Ashford.[4]
Once Maekar arrived at Ashford and found his sons had disappeared, he sent Ser Roland Crakehall of the Kingsguard in search of Daeron and Aegon, then left Ashford to search for them himself. When Daeron was found drunk at the inn, he told his father that a huge robber knight made off with Aegon on the road, and that he spent the whole time pursuing them. This lie added evidence against Dunk after he was arrested for assaulting Aerion Targaryen while defending a woman.[4]
Daeron apologized to Dunk for lying, saying he had not noticed Aegon was gone. He also said he had dreamed a great dragon would fall on Dunk, dead, but the knight would walk away alive. Daeron did not know what it meant, but that his dreams came true and that he was frightened of Dunk. Daeron also told Dunk that he would not fight, and after the first charge in the trial of seven, he would stay on the ground and would also withdraw his accusations.[4]
In the trial, Daeron was unhorsed by Ser Robyn Rhysling, and did as he had promised, staying on the ground. His own horse stepped on him, possibly breaking his foot, but otherwise he was uninjured. Nevertheless, it turned out that Daeron's dream was a true prophecy, as Prince Baelor died from his injuries in Dunk's arms.[4]
Later life
Daeron's father ascended to the throne as King Maekar I Targaryen in 221 AC after the death of King Aerys I Targaryen, who had no other living heirs. This made Daeron the Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne, though he preferred to be called Prince of Summerhall as he considered Dragonstone "such a gloomy abode".[7] Daeron's brother Aemon served as his maester[8] at Dragonstone, until Daeron's death.[9]
Daeron married Kiera of Tyrosh, the widow of his cousin, Prince Valarr Targaryen.[3] Their daughter, Princess Vaella Targaryen was born in 222 AC, and proved to be sweet but simple-minded.[7][8]
Daeron died some time before 233 AC, reputedly from a pox he caught from a whore.[8] His brother Aemon later claimed that the dreams of dragons that plagued Daeron killed him, as they did their brothers Aerion and Aegon.[10] Daeron predeceasing his father was one of the factors that led to the succession crisis after Maekar's death, which was resolved in the Great Council of 233 AC.[7]

A Clash of Kings
Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, tells his steward, Jon Snow, that Maester Aemon and his oldest brother Daeron, together with their other brothers, had been summoned to court when their father had been crowned King Maekar I Targaryen. Daeron, as the Prince of Dragonstone, was joined by his second brother Aemon, who had served as Daeron's maester. Jeor tells Jon that Daeron died of the pox, leaving only a feeble-witted daughter behind as his heir.[8]
A Feast for Crows
In the twilight of his life, Maester Aemon recalls to Samwell Tarly how all three of his brothers dreamed of dragons and how the dreams killed each of them.[10] During one of his last good days, Aemon wonders if when he dies, will he be reunited with his siblings, and find Daeron whole and happy. Aemon also mentions his brother's dream and a prophecy before telling Sam that Daenerys Targaryen,[11] who birthed the first dragons in over a century,[12] is their hope and the prince that was promised. Although Aemon does not specify which brother or what the dream was about,[11] Daeron did dream that the dragons would return.[6]
