Aurane Waters, called the Bastard of Driftmark, is a bastard member of House Velaryon.[7] He is the half-brother of Monford Velaryon, Lord of the Tides and Master of Driftmark.[6]
Appearance and Character
[edit]Aurane is lean, with silver-gold hair and grey-green eyes.[1] He has a cleft in his chin[1] and has a beard.[2]
The haughty Bastard of Driftmark has a dry wit.[2]
Aurane's appearance reminds Cersei Lannister of Rhaegar Targaryen, although Aurane's face is narrower,[1] and Rhaegar had deep purple eyes.[8] Cersei finds Aurane to be handsome[1] and dashing[2] with a wicked smile.[9]
Recent Events

[edit]House Velaryon declares for Stannis Baratheon during the War of the Five Kings,[10] but Lord Monford Velaryon is killed in the Battle of the Blackwater.[11] His half-brother Aurane is captured and bends the knee to King Joffrey I Baratheon in the throne room.[12]
A Feast for Crows

Aurane shares a cup of wine with Elinor Tyrell during the wedding of Tommen I Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell.[1] Aurane reminds Queen Regent Cersei Lannister of the late Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone,[1] whom Cersei had wanted to marry in her youth.[13]
Believing that Aurane desires her, Cersei grants him the position of grand admiral, formerly the master of ships, on the small council of King Tommen's.[2] He receives the honorary title of lord, though it does not come with any lands.[3] Ser Jaime Lannister, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and Cersei's brother, does not approve of the appointment.[14]
Since most of the royal fleet was destroyed at the Blackwater, Lord Waters recommends to the council that at least ten new dromonds be built, and he suggests that poachers and thieves be their oarsmen instead of being sent to the Wall. He also informs the council that Golden Company has broken their contract with Myr, and he skeptically reports that dragons have been seen in the east.[2] During a later session, Grand Maester Pycelle disagrees with Aurane's plan to captain the dromonds with younger men, rather than veterans of the Blackwater.[13] Cersei approves of Aurane's suggestion to name the new flagship Lord Tywin after her late father. Young King Tommen wants to name one of the dromonds after Moon Boy, but decides to call it Princess Myrcella instead after Lord Waters advises him against naming a ship after a fool.[15]
When the small council discusses the taking of the Shields by the ironborn, Lord Waters opposes Ser Loras Tyrell's suggestion that the Redwyne fleet return to the Reach, as that would disrupt the siege of Dragonstone by Lord Paxter Redwyne. Loras volunteers to take Dragonstone quickly so that the Redwynes can be redirected against the ironborn.[16]
Aurane returns from Dragonstone on Sweet Cersei and reports that the castle has been taken, but Loras was gravely wounded during the assault.[9] Cersei thinks Aurane covets Dragonstone, but she feels Rosby would be more fitting for him after the death of Lord Gyles Rosby.[3]
Because of increasing unrest in King's Landing after the arrest of Queen Margaery Tyrell by the Faith of the Seven, Aurane tells Queen Cersei that he will launch her new dromonds on the Blackwater Rush to keep the peace and potentially prevent Lord Mace Tyrell from rescuing his daughter, Margaery. During her own imprisonment by the Faith, Cersei is visited by Qyburn, who tells the queen that Lord Waters fled the capital with the new ships after her arrest and took to sea. Ser Harys Swyft fears that Aurane will rejoin Stannis, while Pycelle thinks he will become a pirate in the Stepstones.[17]

According to Valena Toland, a new pirate king has set up on Torturer's Deep in the Stepstones, styling himself the Lord of the Waters and commanding three-decked warships.[4] Some readers have theorized this to be Aurane, with the title Lord of the Waters being a play on "Waters", the surname for noble bastards from the crownlands such as Aurane himself, and the traditional title for the head of House Velaryon, "Lord of the Tides".
