House Payne is a noble house from the westerlands. It is one of the principal houses sworn to House Lannister.[1] Their arms are purple and white chequy with gold coins in the checks.[2][3]
History
[edit]There is a story behind the coins on the arms of House Payne, but the details are currently unknown.[2]
Ser Ilyn Payne was captain of guards for Tywin Lannister when the Lord of Casterly Rock served as Hand of the King for Aerys II Targaryen. Ilyn had his tongue torn out by the Mad King for comments on who truly ruled the Seven Kingdoms.[4][5] During the wedding of Robert I Baratheon and Cersei Lannister, Ilyn was named the King's Justice as Robert's gift for Tywin.[6]
The father of Podrick Payne died during Greyjoy's Rebellion.[7]
Recent Events

Ser Ilyn Payne comes north to meet King Robert I Baratheon on his ride south after naming Lord Eddard Stark as his new Hand of the King. Ilyn rides with Lord Renly Baratheon and Ser Barristan Selmy. At Darry, Queen Cersei Lannister asks Ilyn to kill Lady, Sansa Stark's direwolf, but Eddard does the deed himself, saying that the creature deserves better than a butcher.[8]
When Eddard needs a commander for the men sent to kill Ser Gregor Clegane, Ilyn is one of the candidates put forth. Lord Stark chooses Lord Beric Dondarrion to lead the mission, however.[9]
Podrick Payne is made Tyrion Lannister's squire when Tyrion joins Lord Tywin Lannister's army before the battle on the Green Fork.[10]
Ilyn executes Eddard with his own Valyrian steel greatsword, Ice, on the steps of the Great Sept of Baelor after being ordered by King Joffrey I Baratheon.[11]
A Clash of Kings
[edit]During the Battle of the Blackwater, Ser Ilyn is stationed near Cersei so if Stannis Baratheon were to win, she would have Ilyn behead her to prevent her from falling into Stannis's hands.[12]
Podrick accompanies Tyrion in his sorties outside the walls of King's Landing. In the last jaunt, he saves Tyrion from Ser Mandon Moore of the Kingsguard.[13]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]Podrick is among Tyrion's group of gathered nobility who welcomes the Dornish party, headed by Prince Oberyn Martell, to King's Landing.[14]
Ilyn relinquishes Eddard's sword Ice to Tywin, and in return receives a new blade.[15]
A Feast for Crows

Ilyn accompanies Ser Jaime Lannister in his campaign to pacify the riverlands and resolve the siege of Riverrun. The one-handed Jaime chooses Ilyn as his new sparring partner because the headsman cannot talk, read, or write.[6]
Podrick follows Brienne of Tarth from King's Landing to Maidenpool.[16] Brienne seeks Sansa Stark, who in turn might know the whereabouts of her husband Tyrion, a fugitive after the death of his father, Tywin. Brienne learns that Podrick is from a lesser branch of House Payne. He had squired for Ser Cedric Payne, who died in the riverlands campaign during the War of the Five Kings. He then squired for Ser Lorimer, who was hanged for stealing a ham. Ser Kevan Lannister then sent Podrick to squire for Tyrion.[7]
Podrick is with Brienne during her encounters with remnants of the Brave Companions at the Whispers[17] and the crossroads inn.[18] When they are captured by the brotherhood without banners, Podrick is judged guilty of association with the Lannisters and is sentenced to hang by Lady Stoneheart.[19]
