Ser Jaime Lannister is captured in the Whispering Wood, by Chris Rahn © Fantasy Flight Games

When Robb Stark rides to war against the Lannisters after the arrest in King's Landing of his father, Lord Eddard Stark, he surrounds himself with highborn warriors. Just as he rides with a different lord at the head of his army every day in order to know and honor his bannermen, Robb's choice of bodyguards serves to honor the houses from which they are picked. Most of these fighters are young men, although Dacey Mormont is female and Ser Wendel Manderly and Robin Flint are mature men.[1]

Forming Robb's battle guard during the battle in the Whispering Wood are thirty nobles.[1] Before being captured in the battle, Ser Jaime Lannister slays Torrhen Karstark, Eddard Karstark, and Daryn Hornwood while fighting to get to Robb.[1]

Robb relieves Riverrun in the Battle of the Camps.[2] After Eddard's execution by order of King Joffrey I Baratheon, Robb is proclaimed King in the North in the Great Hall of Riverrun by northern and river lords.[3]

A Clash of Kings

Robb sends northmen and rivermen to protect his mother, Catelyn Stark, during her journey to treat with Renly Baratheon at Bitterbridge and Stannis Baratheon at Storm's End.[4][5][6]

Quotes

Robb turned the big grey stallion and walked him slowly away from her, Grey Wind shadowing his steps. Behind him his battle guard formed up. When he'd forced Catelyn to accept her protectors, she had insisted that he be guarded as well, and the lords bannermen had agreed. Many of their sons had clamored for the honor of riding with the Young Wolf, as they had taken to calling him.[1]

I have fought beside the Young Wolf in every battle, he has not lost one yet.[11]

A wedding feast was not a battle, but there were always dangers when men were in their cups, and a king should never be unguarded.[7]
