The village's houses are defended by a timber palisade and a holdfast.[1]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

Yoren and his band of recruits for the Night's Watch see a great fire in the distance while traveling north toward the Gods Eye during the War of the Five Kings. When they come upon the village the next day, they find that westermen have burned its fields and houses, butchered its animals, and impaled bodies on sharpened stakes atop the walls.[1]

Yoren investigates the remains of the village with Murch and Cutjack. The only survivors they find are a little girl (later called Weasel by Lommy Greenhands)[2] and a one-armed woman, both of whom are taken away in Yoren's wagons. The one-armed woman dies from her wounds, however, and she is buried beneath a weeping willow.[1]

Quotes

It was midday when they arrived at the place where the village had been. The fields were a charred desolation for miles around, the houses blackened shells. The carcasses of burnt and butchered animals dotted the ground, under living blankets of carrion crows that rose, cawing furiously, when disturbed. Smoke still drifted from inside the holdfast. Its timber palisade looked strong from afar, but had not proved strong enough.[1]

—thoughts of Arya Stark

The only wolves we got to fear are the ones wear manskin, like those who done for that village.[1]
