A Storm of Swords
Brienne of Tarth and Ser Cleos Frey stop at the Inn of the Kneeling Man while escorting Ser Jaime Lannister to King's Landing. When they refuse to stay the night, the inn's cook advises them to follow the road downriver of the Red Fork to a village which has been burned during the War of the Five Kings. The road then splits at the village, with a stony route leading south to Warren's stone towerhouse and a southeastern track passing into woods. The cook advises them to take the forest path, as Ser Warren has died and it is unknown who now holds his stronghold. When they reach the burned village, however, Brienne decides they will follow the southern route, fearing that the cook may have outlaw friends waiting to ambush travelers in the woods.[1]
A band of the brotherhood without banners apprehend Arya Stark, Gendry, and Hot Pie at the cottage of Old Pate and bring the youths to the Inn of the Kneeling Man. The cook, called Husband, tells Lem that he had sent Brienne's party in the direction of the woods near the village, but Lem says they never showed.[2]
Quotes
Six miles downriver you'll see a burned village. The road splits there. If you turn south, you'll come on Ser Warren's stone towerhouse. Ser Warren went off and died, so I couldn't say who holds it now, but it's a place best shunned. You'd do better to follow the track through the woods, south by east.[1]
—Husband to Brienne Tarth
When they reached the burned village, a choice of equally unpromising roads confronted them; narrow tracks, deeply rutted by the carts of farmers hauling their grain to the river. One wandered off toward the southeast and soon vanished amidst the trees they could see in the distance, while the other, straighter and stonier, arrowed due south. Brienne considered them briefly, and then swung her horse onto the southern road. Jaime was pleasantly surprised; it was the same choice he would have made.[1]
