A Storm of Swords

Brienne of Tarth and Ser Cleos Frey stop at the Inn of the Kneeling Man while escorting Ser Jaime Lannister to King's Landing. When they refuse to stay the night, the inn's cook advises them to follow the road downriver of the Red Fork to a village which has been burned during the War of the Five Kings. The road then splits at the village, with a stony route leading south to the towerhouse and a southeastern track passing into woods. The cook advises them to take the forest path, as Ser Warren has died and it is unknown who now holds his stronghold.[1]

When the three travelers reach the burned village, Brienne decides they will follow the southern route, fearing that the cook may have outlaw friends waiting to ambush wayfarers in the woods. They then keep their distance from the towerhouse, traveling instead through nearby fields in the darkness before finding the road again.[1]

Quotes

Six miles downriver you'll see a burned village. The road splits there. If you turn south, you'll come on Ser Warren's stone towerhouse. Ser Warren went off and died, so I couldn't say who holds it now, but it's a place best shunned. You'd do better to follow the track through the woods, south by east.[1]

The ruddy light from the upper windows of the stone towerhouse gave them warning of its presence a long way off, and Brienne led them off into the fields. Only when the stronghold was well to the rear did they angle back and find the road again.[1]
