A Storm of Swords
Arya Stark and Gendry depart the Inn of the Kneeling Man in the company of the brotherhood without banners. Arya expected they would follow the Red Fork west to Riverrun, but she thinks they are instead traveling south. After a few days of travel, they stop at a burned, abandoned village. When Jack-Be-Lucky blows his horn, however, villagers emerge from the ruins and from secret cellars.[1]
The villagers share their ale, apples, and stale barley bread, and the brotherhood provide a goose which had been shot down by Anguy. As they all eat, the villagers inform the brotherhood that Ser Jaime Lannister has escaped from the dungeons of Riverrun, and that men had come by two days prior in search of the Kingslayer. Tom of Sevenstreams sings a song about the Kingswood Brotherhood.[1]
When the brotherhood depart the next morning, they leave the road and cut across fields. Arya concludes that they are indeed heading south instead of toward Riverrun, and the outlaws reveal they are taking her to Beric Dondarrion.[1]
Quotes
That night they sheltered in a burned, abandoned village. At least it seemed to be abandoned, until Jack-Be-Lucky blew two short blasts and two long ones on his hunting horn. Then all sorts of people came crawling out of the ruins and up from secret cellars.[1]
