Alannys Harlaw,[1] also known as Lady Greyjoy,[2] is the wife of Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands. Originally from House Harlaw, she is the younger sister of Gwynesse Harlaw and Rodrik Harlaw, Lord of Harlaw. Alannys had four children with Balon; Rodrik, Maron, Asha, and Theon.[6] She is nicknamed Lanny by Rodrik.[1]
Appearance and Character
[edit]Alannys has long white hair and thin skin. Although never a conventional beauty, she once had a strong face and laughing eyes. She has become frail and sickly,[1] however, with a troubling cough.[7]
Alannys has lost much of her mental faculties, frequently forgetting that her sons Rodrik and Maron have died.[1]
History
[edit]During Greyjoy's Rebellion, Balon Greyjoy declared himself King of the Iron Islands, with Alannys as his queen. Her eldest two sons, Rodrik and Maron, were killed during the rebellion, however, and her youngest son, Theon, was taken by Lord Eddard Stark as a hostage when Balon submitted to King Robert I Baratheon.[8]
With Theon away at Winterfell, Alannys brought five boys, including Tristifer Botley, to Pyke to foster.[1] Alannys raised her daughter, Asha Greyjoy, to be bold.[1]
As time passed, Alannys began to roam the halls of Pyke in search of her lost sons, even walking the rope bridge to the Sea Tower while barefoot; a maester often had to draw splinters from her heels.[1]
Alannys eventually moved to Ten Towers to live with her sister, Gwynesse Harlaw, as Harlaw is less raw than Pyke.[7]

When Theon Greyjoy returns to the Iron Islands for the first time since Greyjoy's Rebellion, his mother is on Harlaw and not expected to return to Pyke due to her poor health.[2] Theon offers to have "Esgred" dressed in one of his mother's gowns as they ride to Pyke, not knowing she is actually his sister, Asha Greyjoy.[2]
Alannys's husband, Lord Balon Greyjoy, declares himself King of the Isles and the North.[9] Asha stops at Ten Towers to take on fresh water before sailing against Deepwood Motte. Alannys sits by a window and asks for Theon, who has been sent by Balon to harry the Stony Shore. Asha fears her mother will pass away before she returns.[1]
After the capture of Winterfell by Theon, Asha advises her brother to return with her to Deepwood for their mother's sake, but he refuses.[10] Theon is later defeated in the sack of Winterfell by House Bolton.[11]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]Theon is taken to the Dreadfort by Ramsay Snow, the Bastard of Bolton, as a prisoner.[12]
Lord Tywin Lannister informs the small council that Balon's wife is elderly and failing.[13]
Queen Alannys is widowed after Balon falls to his death from Pyke. Balon's younger brother, Euron Crow's Eye, returns from exile and claims the Seastone Chair.[14]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]Alannys lives with her sister Gwynesse in the Widow's Tower at Ten Towers, the castle of their brother, Lord Rodrik Harlaw. Rodrik feels that Alannys is beginning to recover on Harlaw, though she is still frail.[1] Maester Wendamyr sends a raven from Pyke to inform Alannys of Balon's death and Euron's return. Alannys believes her husband was murdered.[1]
Asha visits the ruins of Winterfell and fears that Theon is among the numerous slain.[1] She returns to Ten Towers from Deepwood after learning of her father's death. Asha delays reuniting with her mother until morning, choosing to meet with her uncle first. Rodrik advises his niece against attending the kingsmoot on Old Wyk called by another uncle, Aeron Greyjoy, with the Reader unsuccessfully encouraging Asha to instead stay with her declining mother.[1] Tristifer Botley reveals that Alannys gave her consent for him to marry Asha, but Asha has no interest in wedding her childhood friend.[1]
At Old Wyk, Asha warns another uncle, Lord Captain Victarion Greyjoy, that Balon's crowns were bought with empty beds and mentions her mother. During the feast held by Victarion, Asha accuses Euron of making Alannys a widow.[15] Asha and Victarion are both candidates at the ensuing kingsmoot, but Euron is chosen by the ironborn to succeed Balon.[16]
A Dance with Dragons
[edit]Having fled Old Wyk after the kingsmoot, Asha briefly stops at Ten Towers to bid farewell to her mother before continuing on to Deepwood. Alannys does not understand, and only asks about Theon again.[17][18]
