History

In some historical accounts, Qhored the Cruel, High King of the Iron Islands, is said to have been a Blacktyde.[6]

High King Joron I Blacktyde captured Gyles II Gardener, King of the Reach, when their fleets clashed off the Misty Islands. After torturing the king to death, Joron cut Gyles's corpse to pieces for bait. He also raided the Arbor, carrying off many of its women.[6]

After the death of Dalton Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands at Faircastle, the Blacktydes and the Harlaws joined the Red Kraken's cousins to raise up Rodrik Greyjoy, a younger salt son of Dalton, as the Red Kraken's successor. The resulting bloody struggle for power in the Iron Islands lasted for half a year.[7]

Lord Blacktyde was killed in battle during Greyjoy's Rebellion.[8] After the war, his son Baelor was taken as a hostage for eight years in the city of Oldtown in the Reach.[9] Upon his return, Baelor had converted to the mainland's Faith of the Seven.[8]

Also after the rebellion, the young Tristifer Botley was sent away to be fostered with the Blacktydes. Tris had been fostered at Pyke with the Greyjoys, but was sent away by Lord Balon Greyjoy when Maester Qalen told him the boy intended to marry Balon's daughter, Asha Greyjoy. At Blacktyde, Maester Joseran refused to send letters from Tris to Asha.[9]

A Clash of Kings

War breaks out on mainland Westeros after the death of King Robert I Baratheon, and Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands, calls the banners to his seat of Pyke. The recently-crowned King in the North, Robb Stark, assigns Theon Greyjoy to travel to the Iron Islands and seek an alliance with his father, Balon, against the Iron Throne.[10] In the Great Hall of Pyke, Theon notices his father has gathered hundreds of his captains, with the Blacktydes from Blacktyde amongst them.[3]

During the War of the Five Kings, Balon declares himself first King of the Iron Islands[11] and then King of the Isles and the North.[12]

A Feast for Crows

After Balon falls to his death at Pyke, his youngest brother Aeron demands a kingsmoot be held to elect a new king.[13] Blind Beron Blacktyde is one of the priests of the Drowned God who add their voices to the Damphair's call.[9]

Visiting Lord Rodrik Harlaw at Ten Towers, Lord Baelor Blacktyde fears that Euron Greyjoy, who has already claimed the Seastone Chair, will descend upon the other candidates and kill them all, just like Urron Greyiron had done at the last kingsmoot thousands of years before.[9]

Victarion Greyjoy sees Baelor's ship, Nightflyer, when he arrives at Nagga's Cradle with the Iron Fleet. Remembering that his father had been killed in Greyjoy's Rebellion, Baelor is cautious about supporting the bellicose Victarion.[8] Baelor decides to follow Asha Greyjoy instead after she announces that if she were to win, she would bring about the conflict's ending.[14] Against Aeron's intentions, his hated brother Euron is chosen during the kingsmoot on Old Wyk.[14]

After Euron is crowned, he commands the Iron Fleet to close Nagga's Cradle, blocking all ships from leaving. Baelor's Nightflyer is seized and Lord Blacktyde is delivered to Euron in chains for refusing to accept him as king. Euron orders his men to kill Baelor and cut him in seven pieces in ironic tribute to his worship of the seven mainland gods.[15]

After the taking of the Shields, Euron wears Baelor's sable cloak.[15]

A Dance with Dragons

Blind Beron is put to questioning during Euron's hunt for Aeron Damphair.[16]

Quotes

Lord Blacktyde says this kingsmoot is a dangerous folly. He thinks your uncle will descend on them and kill them all, as Urron did.[9]

Balon the Widowmaker, I call him. I will gladly trade his freedom for a father. Have you one to give?[8]
