Whipping

Whipping, also known are scourging, is a method of punishment and torture practiced throughout the known world. It usually involves the lashing of the victim's back.

Culture

The Faith of the Seven practices whipping as a method of both torture and penance.[1]

Scourging is one of the common punishments for slaves.[2]

Whipping boys and girls are lowborn children employed to bear the punishment of highborn children for their transgressions when they cannot be beaten or whipped themselves, due to their health or status. This practice is more common in Essos than in Westeros.[3]

History

After learning of King Viserys I Targaryen's wedding to Lady Alicent Hightower, Prince Daemon Targaryen is said to have whipped the servant who brought him the news within an inch of his life.[4][5]

Maester Pol was thrice whipped publicly and cast out from Qohor for his inquiries into the forging of Valyrian steel.[6]

After his fall from power, Lysaro Rogare was whipped to death by those he had wronged at the Temple of Trade.[7]

During her visit to Maggy the Frog, Cersei Lannister threatened to have the maegi whipped.[8]

Lord Roose Bolton once ordered Reek to be whipped a dozen times for stealing perfume from the bedchamber of Lady Bethany.[9]

Two Qartheen warlocks once came to Horn Hill and claimed they could use sorcery to make Samwell Tarly brave. They had him bathe in the hot blood of a freshly slaughtered aurochs, but when Samwell only became nauseated, Lord Randyll Tarly had the pair scourged.[10]

A Clash of Kings

Theon Greyjoy has two of his men, Drennan being one of them, whipped for the rape of Palla.[11]

A Storm of Swords

Whenever Septon Utt rapes and murders a new boy, he has his fellow Brave Companions scourge him afterwards, which they find entertaining.[12]

After Alayaya is mistakenly identified as Tyrion Lannister's mistress, Lord Tywin Lannister orders her to be tied to a post in the Red Keep's yard and whipped.[13]

On account of young Lord Robert Arryn's delicate health, his mother, Lady Lysa Arryn, employs a whipping boy for him. When Lysa sees her husband Petyr Baelish kiss "Alayne Stone", she plans on finding a common girl to take a whipping in Alayne's place.[3]

A Feast for Crows

At Tywin Lannister's funeral, Queen Regent Cersei Lannister sees that Grand Maester Pycelle is sitting with his eyes closed, and thinks that if he has fallen asleep, she will have him whipped.[14]

Pate becomes the whipping boy for young King Tommen Baratheon, as he had been for his older brother, King Joffrey Baratheon.[15]

Tommen argues with his mother, Cersei Lannister, saying that his wife, Queen Margaery Tyrell, had told him he should be more active in the rule of the kingdom, and Cersei idly comments that Margaery says too much and she would like to have her tongue torn out. This infuriates Tommen, who forbids Cersei from hurting Margaery. Cersei then orders Ser Boros Blount of the Kingsguard to take Tommen to his bedchamber, summon Pate, and force Tommen to whip Pate himself until the boy bleeds from both cheeks. Cersei further orders, that if Tommen refuses or says one word of protest, Qyburn will be summoned and remove Pate's tongue in front of Tommen. Tommen is very subdued afterwards, and Cersei is satisfied that punishing Pate served its purpose.[8]

The High Sparrow, a leader of the Sparrows movement who was named the new High Septon when his followers threatened the Most Devout, regularly has himself whipped as form of penance. He claims to rarely feel closer to god than during the experience.[1]

After being delivered to the High Sparrow for interrogation, the Blue Bard is whipped to ensure that his accusations against Queen Margaery and her alleged lovers are true.[1]

Ser Osney Kettleblack eagerly confesses to having bedded Queen Margaery, and the High Sparrow orders him whipped as penance. Under torture, Osney confesses to have actually bedded Queen Cersei, and that he murdered the previous High Septon on her orders.[1]

A Dance with Dragons

Whipping is one of the torture methods employed by Ramsay Snow to turn Theon Greyjoy into the new "Reek".[16]

When ordering several Windblown of Westerosi origin to defect to Daenerys Targaryen, the Tattered Prince suggests Dick Straw to cite being whipped more than others as the reason for his defection.[17]

Theon sees that Jeyne Poole has been whipped during her captivity in one of Petyr Baelish's brothels, which has left a spiderweb of faint lines across her back.[18]

After arriving to the outskirts of Meereen to be sold into slavery, Tyrion Lannister witnesses a slave being whipped until he is covered in blood and his raw flesh is exposed.[19]

Victarion Greyjoy has one of his oarsmen scourged for accusing Moqorro of summoning demons.[19]
