Princess Daenerys Targaryen was the daughter of Aegon IV Targaryen and Naerys Targaryen, and the younger sister of King Daeron II Targaryen. Daenerys Targaryen, daughter of Aerys II Targaryen and Rhaella Targaryen, was named after her.[7]
History

Princess Daenerys was born in 172 AC, some nineteen years after the birth of her brother, Prince Daeron Targaryen, who had been born in 153 AC, the year their parents had been wed.[8][4] Daenerys had a twin brother, who was stillborn. Her mother, Queen Naerys, lingered near death due to the difficult birth, but eventually recovered.[5]
Maron and Daemon
[edit]It was said that Daenerys loved her half-brother, Daemon Blackfyre,[9] and their passion was known by the whole realm.[6] Neither their father, King Aegon IV Targaryen, nor their brother, King Daeron II, were willing to let their love dictate political matters, however. Instead, both kings negotiated matches for Daemon and Daenerys to secure ties with Tyrosh and Dorne, respectively.[3]
Daenerys's betrothal to Maron Martell, Prince of Dorne, was brokered by King Daeron as part of the treaty bringing Dorne into the realm of the Iron Throne,[3] after negotiations lasting two years.[3] A year later in 187 AC, when she was of age, Daenerys's wedding to Maron was held in King's Landing. After the ceremony, Maron and Daeron went to pay their respects to the statue of King Baelor I Targaryen at the sept bearing his name, as Baelor had once brokered the peace between the Iron Throne and Dorne (with the marriage of King Daeron II and Princess Myriah Martell, Maron's older sister, as a result). To celebrate the marriage, a tourney was held, where Daeron's son, Prince Baelor Targaryen, won the name "Breakspear" and the victory, defeating Daemon in the lists in the final tilt.[3]
Daeron's arranging of Daenerys to marry Maron led to Daemon becoming the first of the Blackfyre Pretenders.[10][2] By the time of the First Blackfyre Rebellion, Daemon had been married to Rohanne of Tyrosh for years and had at least nine children with her, and Daenerys had already given Maron multiple heirs.[3] Daemon's supporters claimed that he rebelled because Daenerys was denied to him.[9] Some Blackfyre partisans even advanced the claim that King Aegon had promised to let Daemon have Daenerys as a second wife in the polygamous tradition of their ancestors, Aegon I and Maegor I. Daemon did not rebel until eight years after the wedding, however, and Daenerys is not recorded to have ever mourned Daemon's death in the war.[3]
Water Gardens
[edit]Maron Martell, Prince of Dorne, built the Water Gardens, a place of beauty made of colored marble, with pools, fountains, and trees, to free Daenerys from the heat and dust of Sunspear. Their children played in the pools, along with the children of other highborn lords and ladies. One day, when the sun was hot, Daenerys took pity on the children of the servants and guards, and allowed them to play in the pools with the highborn children, starting a tradition that is still kept in Dorne to this day.[6] As Daenerys watched the children playing, she realized that she could not tell the highborn ones from the lowborn. Naked, they were only innocent and vulnerable children, who all deserved life, love, and protection. Daenerys told her eldest son, Maron's heir, to also look at the children of the Water Gardens, and realize that they were the realm of Dorne, and to remember them in everything he did. Those words may be a tradition kept from one Prince or Princess of Dorne to their heir, to this day.[6]
Legacy
[edit]Princess Daenerys was the namesake for Princess Daenerys Targaryen, the now-exiled daughter of the late King Aerys II Targaryen and Queen Rhaella Targaryen.[7]
When she was younger, Princess Arianne Martell spent hours gazing at the portrait of Daenerys hanging in Sunspear.[11]

While Davos Seaworth is at the Lazy Eel in White Harbor, talk amongst the patrons turns to the daughter of King Aerys II Targaryen, but none of the patrons are sure if her name. Davos mentions it is Daenerys Targaryen, as she was named for the Daenerys who wed Maron Martell during the reign of King Daeron II Targaryen.[7] Aerys's Daenerys now rules as Queen of Meereen.[12]
During a feast at Sunspear, Prince Doran Martell tells Ser Balon Swann about the Water Gardens and that one of his ancestors (Maron) built them to please his Targaryen bride, Daenerys. He adds that it was her marriage that made Dorne part of the Seven Kingdoms. Doran also mentions how Daenerys invited the lowborn children of her servants to play with the highborn children in the pools.[6] Later, in a private conversation with his daughter Arianne and his nieces Obara, Nymeria, and Tyene Sand, Doran continues the story of Daenerys and her eldest son at the Water Gardens. Doran adds that his mother told him the same story when he was a youth.[6]
In Meereen, Arianne's brother, Prince Quentyn Martell, tells Queen Daenerys that he can trace his lineage back to the first Daenerys.[N 1] He tells her that Prince Maron had built the Water Gardens for his bride, though Daenerys admits to never having heard of the palace before. As they make their way back from the pit of the Great Pyramid, Daenerys asks Quentyn to tell her of her namesake. She confesses that she knows less than she should of the history of her father's kingdom, as she never had a maester to teach her.[1]
Barristan Selmy recalls some of the great love affairs of Westeros history that had led to war, including the first Daenerys[N 1] and Daemon Blackfyre.[2]

My own mother said those same words to me when I was old enough to leave the pools. It is an easy thing for a prince to call the spears, but in the end the children pay the price. For their sake, the wise prince will wage no war without good cause, nor any war he cannot hope to win.[6]
Daemon Blackfyre loved the first Daenerys, and rose in rebellion when denied her.[2]
