Ser Gerold Hightower, known as the White Bull for his immense strength in his prime, was a famous member of the Kingsguard. He was the Lord Commander of Aerys II's Kingsguard.[1] He is the uncle of Lord Leyton Hightower.[2]
History
The White Bull was presumably already Lord Commander in 261 AL, when he accepted Barristan Selmy into the order. In 281 AL, Ser Gerold was shot through the hand by an outlaw of the Kingswood Brotherhood, who went on to steal a kiss and some jewels from Princess Elia of Dorne. Due to his wound, Hightower ceded command to Arthur Dayne when the Kingsguard campaigned against the Brotherhood in the forest. Ser Gerold was present when Aerys II burned Lord Rickard Stark alive in the throne room; he reminded Jaime Lannister that they were sworn to defend the king, not to judge him.[3] During Robert's Rebellion, Ser Gerold stayed with two of his Kingsguard brothers at the Tower of Joy in the Red Mountains of Dorne, on the orders of Prince Rhaegar. There they guarded Lyanna Stark. He was missed at the Battle of the Trident and the Sack of King's Landing, before finally being found by Eddard Stark and his companions. He fought with and was killed by them after refusing to bend the knee.[4]
