Emmon Frey is a knight from House Frey and is the second son of Lord Walder Frey and Lady Perra Royce. He is married to Lady Genna Lannister, with whom he has four sons: Cleos, Lyonel, Tion, and Walder.[2]
Appearance and Character
[edit]Emmon is a small man, very thin with a pointed head. Half of his hair was gone before he was thirty and, by sixty, he only had a few remaining white wisps.[2] Lady Catelyn Stark believes Emmon's son Ser Cleos Frey inherited his father's stringy brown hair, weak chin, and thin face.[3] Emmon has a prominent apple in his throat that unflatteringly accentuates his weak chin.[2]
Sullen and cowardly, Emmon is a fretful man with nervous hands[2] and an anxious deposition.[4] He is fearful of his wife, Lady Genna Lannister, and his brother-in-law, Lord Tywin Lannister.[2] Ser Jaime Lannister believes his uncle to be a dullard.[5]
Emmon enjoys chewing on sourleaf, though it leaves a pinkish froth on his lips.[2][4][6]
History
[edit]Emmon Frey is the second son of Walder Frey, Lord of the Crossing, and his first wife, Lady Perra Royce.[7]
Sensing a weakness and a desire for approval in Lord Tytos Lannister, Lord Walder traveled to Casterly Rock and convinced him to betroth his only daughter, Lady Genna Lannister, to his second son, Emmon. A third son himself, Lord Tytos agreed and announced the betrothal at a feast, scandalizing the west and outraging Lord Roger Reyne and Genna's brother, the ten-year-old Tywin Lannister. While Lord Reyne stormed out from the feast and Lady Ellyn Tarbeck laughed, Tywin denounced the marriage in the strongest terms in front of half the nobility of the west, but still the betrothal remained. Emmon has since been fearful of Tywin, now the Lord of Casterly Rock and Warden of the West.[2][8]
Following their marriage, Emmon remained at Casterly Rock with his wife and children. At many a feast, Emmon would nervously poke at his food while his wife jested with whatever household knight happened to be seated to her left. The marriage resulted in four sons, Cleos, Lyonel, Tion, and Walder. Genna claims that all four boys are Emmon's and none dare to question her, least of all Emmon.[2]

[edit]Ser Emmon attends the Hand's tourney in King's Landing with six of his kin—Ser Hosteen, Ser Danwell, Ser Jared, Ser Theo, Ser Perwyn, and Martyn Rivers.[9]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]Although House Frey allied with House Tully and House Stark at the onset of the War of the Five Kings, Emmon took the side of House Lannister and his elder sons fight under their cousin, Ser Jaime Lannister.[5] Over the course of the war, Ser Cleos Frey is killed by outlaws in the riverlands,[10] and his third son, Tion Frey, is murdered alongside his cousin Willem Lannister by Lord Rickard Karstark.[11]
In the aftermath of the Red Wedding, as part of the deal between Lord Tywin Lannister and Lord Walder Frey, Lord Edmure Tully is attainted by the crown and stripped of Riverrun. The lands, incomes, and castle are granted to Emmon and his wife, Lady Genna Lannister.[12] Emmon is to receive Riverrun once Ser Brynden Tully yields the castle.[13]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]Upon learning that he had been made a lord, Emmon and his wife immediately depart for Riverrun. Emmon is among the Freys at the siege of Riverrun, encamping south of the Red Fork, and tries to direct Ser Daven Lannister on how to conduct the siege, hoping to avoid damage to his new seat. He regularly beseeches Ser Daven to insist that Ser Ryman Frey hang the captive Lord Edmure Tully, to no avail.[2]
With Ser Brynden Tully refusing to surrender Riverrun, Ser Jaime Lannister is sent from King's Landing with reinforcements to help resolve the siege. Upon conferring with Emmon and his aunt Genna, Jaime lies to them about the manner of Cleos' death, claiming Cleos had bravely scattered the outlaws that killed him; this pleases Emmon and Genna. As the new Lord of Riverrun, Emmon mistakenly believes he is the new overlord of the riverlands until Jaime clarifies that honor is held by Petyr Baelish, the new Lord Paramount of the Trident, much to Emmon's displeasure. Believing Emmon to be a poor lord, Genna is displeased with Riverrun as the Tullys still flourish in the male line, preferring Darry as House Darry is extinct in the legitimate male line and Cleos was married to Lady Jeyne Darry.[2]
Emmon continues to demand the death of Edmure and to avoid any damage to Riverrun, frequently pulling out his parchment from the crown, much to the annoyance of Jaime, the riverlords, and even the other Freys. Eventually, Jaime is able to bloodlessly resolve the siege by having Edmure speak with his uncle, Ser Brynden.[6] However, Emmon is furious when Brynden escapes with assistance from Edmure. Emmon demands the execution of Edmure, but Jaime intends to send the attainted Tully to Casterly Rock as a hostage. Emmon holds Riverrun with a garrison of two hundred men, but fears that Brynden will return to retake the castle. Now in control of Riverrun, he pontificates to the castle's servants for nearly three hours, and the singer Tom of Sevenstreams decides to enter Emmon's service.[4]

Jaime remembered many a feast where Emmon sat poking at his food sullenly whilst his wife made ribald jests with whatever household knight had been seated to her left, their conversations punctuated by loud bursts of laughter. She gave Frey four sons, to be sure. At least she says they are his. No one in Casterly Rock had the courage to suggest otherwise, least of all Ser Emmon.[2]
