The Lonely Light is the westernmost island of the Iron Islands. A beacon blazes at all times on the roof of the island's namesake keep,[1] which is the seat of House Farwynd of the Lonely Light.[1]
Geography
[edit]
While most of the Iron Islands lie in Ironman's Bay, there is a smaller group of thirteen islands[1] clustered around the Lonely Light lying eight days sail northwest of Great Wyk.[2] It lies well into the Sunset Sea and is probably the most westerly location in the known world[3] aside from the isles Aegon, Rhaenys, and Visenya.[4]
The Lonely Light is surrounded by rookeries of seals and sea lions and ocean.[2][5] Some say that House Farwynd of the Lonely Light and their smallfolk sleep with seals to birth half-human children, and others claim they are skinchangers who take the forms of sea lions, walruses, and spotted whales.[1]
History
[edit]A thousand years after the time of King Brandon the Burner, ironborn sailing out of Great Wyk were blown off course to a cluster of islands eight days sail from the closest shore. Their captain built a tower and a beacon there, took the name "Farwynd", and declared the Lonely Light his seat.[6]

Quotes
[edit]Aeron knew some Farwynds, a queer folk who held lands on the westernmost shores of Great Wyk and the scattered isles beyond, rocks so small that most could support but a single household. Of those, the Lonely Light was the most distant, eight days' sail to the northwest amongst rookeries of seals and sea lions and the boundless grey oceans. The Farwynds there were even queerer than the rest. Some said they were skinchangers, unholy creatures who could take on the forms of sea lions, walruses, even spotted whales, the wolves of the wild sea.[2]
