The Good Masters are the ruling class of Astapor, one of the cities of Slaver's Bay.

Culture

The Good Masters belong to the great slaver families of Astapor. They light silk lanterns on the terraces of their pyramids,[1] and they wear tokars.[2]

The Good Masters have a wooden platform with tortured slaves on display at the Plaza of Punishment when new slaves first arrive in the city.[2]

The Good Masters sell Unsullied, the eunuch soldiers of Astapor,[1] and do not allow the slaves to retain their given names.[3]

Ser Jorah Mormont advises Daenerys Targaryen to contact the Good Masters in order to obtain an army of Unsullied. Daenerys is shown the eunuch soldiers by Kraznys mo Nakloz and his slave interpreter, Missandei.[1]

Daenerys meets with eight of the Good Masters atop a pyramid, and she agrees to buy all Unsullied in exchange for her three ships and Drogon.[2] When the transaction is completed in the Plaza of Punishment, however, Daenerys turns all three of her dragons against the Good Masters and orders her newly-bought Unsullied to kill the slavers during the fall of Astapor.[2]

Daenerys frees the slaves of Astapor and leaves a council of former slaves to rule the city when she departs for Yunkai.[4] Daenerys gives wine from the cellars of the Good Masters to Mero, captain of the Second Sons. The sellswords are then too drunk to fight in the battle near Yunkai.[4]

Daenerys continues north and conquers Meereen. The envoy Ghael travels to Meereen and informs Daenerys that Cleon overthrew the Astapori council for allegedly plotting to restore the Good Masters to power.[5]

A Dance with Dragons

Cleon the Butcher King restores slavery to Astapor, with the former masters now enslaved by former slaves.[3]

The Yunkai'i are successful in their siege of Astapor, during which Cleon is killed by his own soldiers.[6]

According to the peace treaty between Meereen and Yunkai, Astapor is to be restored in its old form as a slaver city.[7]
