Culture
[edit]A weeping willow is depicted in the arms of House Ryger of Willow Wood.[1] Old Willow, White Willow, and Sweetwillow are other locations in the riverlands.[2] The Big Willow and the Little Willow are tributaries of the Trident.[3]
Willow is a common given name in Westeros.
History
[edit]The Wailing Willows was a battle fought on the southern shore of the Gods Eye during Aegon's Conquest.[4]
Ser Glendon Flowers was mockingly referred to as the Knight of the Pussywillows because his mother, Penny Jenny, worked at a brothel called the Pussywillows.[5] Ser Duncan the Tall observed willows along the Chequy Water[6] and by the old inn by the lakeshore.[5]

[edit]While traveling north toward the Gods Eye, Yoren's company passes through little valleys where willows crowd close to slow shallow streams.[7] After a villager dies from wounds suffered during the War of the Five Kings, Gendry and Cutjack bury her beneath a weeping willow.[7]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]Ser Jaime Lannister sees willows near the Red Fork and on an island in the river.[8]
Arya Stark encounters the brotherhood without banners near willows by the Trident, and Tom of Sevenstreams tells her that he buried Old Pate beneath one of the willows.[9] The brotherhood capture Sandor Clegane while the Hound is drunkenly sleeping under a willow.[10]
Jon Snow has a chew of willow bark to help with his wounds after returning to Castle Black.[11]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]The Iron Fleet rests amongst the reeds and willows of the Fever River.[12]
Princess Arianne Martell's party arrives at the Greenblood and finds the boat they are awaiting hidden beneath the drooping branches of a great green willow. Areo Hotah lies in wait, however, and disrupts Arianne's plan to crown Princess Shireen Baratheon.[13]
Jaime notices wind gusting through a stand of willows near the siege of Riverrun.[14]
Brienne of Tarth hears wind rustling through a clump of pussywillows along the Bay of Crabs.[15] The brotherhood without banners hang their victims from a variety of trees, including hoary old willows, near the inn at the crossroads.[16] The outlaws later attempt to hang Brienne beneath a crooked willow.[17]
A Dance with Dragons
[edit]Tyrion Lannister sees gnarled old willows by the banks of the Little Rhoyne.[18]
The Rhoyne south of Volon Therys passes through willow groves.[19]
