The Bay of Seals is a bay in the north that extends from beyond the Wall to the shores that fall under the domain of House Umber.[1] The Night's Watch have a castle astride it, Eastwatch-by-the-Sea. Isles of the bay, which is named after the animal, include Skagos and Skane.[2][3]

Geography

The grey and green waters of the Bay of Seals are choppy.[4] The wooded coastline to its south has rocks and whirlpools.[4]

Free folk raiders sometime cross the Bay of Seals in small boats[1][5] and rafts.[6]

History

According to Jon Snow, free folk have crossed the Bay of Seals to raid the lands of House Umber since the Dawn of Days.[7]

In the Feast of Skane, stoneborn from Skagos raided Skane, allegedly rendering the isle uninhabited.[4][8] Brandon IX Stark, King in the North, stopped Skagosi from raiding the mainland by destroying their ships and denying them the sea.[8]

Galleys from Eastwatch-by-the-Sea caught Cobblecat in the Bay of Seals.[9]

Quotes

The Bay of Seals was a lot deeper than his waist, and not so friendly as that little fishpond below his father's castle. Its waters were grey and green and choppy, and the wooded shore they followed was a snarl of rocks and whirlpools.[4]

It was cold when the wind was blowing, but there was something bracing about the salt smell in the air.[4]
