The seal is a mammal that dwells on shores, adapted to swimming and diving in the sea.

Range

Seals are found beyond the Wall,[1] including near Hardhome,[2] and the Bay of Seals is found near the narrow and Shivering Seas.[3]

Colonies of seals live offshore of Sea Dragon Point.[4] Seals rest on the broken rocks below Seal Rock at White Harbor, and the Seal Gate is one of the gates of the city.[5]

In the Iron Islands, seals are common in the Sunset Sea west of Great Wyk,[6] and Sealskin Point is located on that isle.[7] The seals in rookeries at the Lonely Light[8] are said to outnumber men fifty to one.[9]

Seals live on rocks in the Shivering Sea off the coasts of northern Essos,[10][11] including large numbers in Lorath Bay.[12]

Culture

The ironborn of the Iron Islands often wear sealskin cloaks[13] and blankets.[8] Lord Balon Greyjoy wears robes made of dusty sealskins,[14] and his brother Aeron wears only a sealskin clout when drowning his acolytes.[15] Aeron's drowned men camp on beaches in sealskin tents.[15] Tristifer Botley has a sealskin cloak,[13] and the Stonehouse wears ragged sealskin.[8] House Farwynd of the Lonely Light and their smallfolk are rumored to sleep with seals and have half-human children.[6]

Many northmen, including the Karstarks,[16] wear cloaks of sealskin.[17] Free folk living beyond the Wall wear sealskin, and Devyn Sealskinner is one of their leaders.[18]

Lord Duram Bar Emmon's purple velvet is trimmed with white seal.[19] Sistermen also wear sealskin cloaks.[20]

Sealskin makes up much of the trade of Lorath.[12]

History

Roro Uhoris always counted the seals at Seal Rock whenever Cobblecat left White Harbor, believing that more seals would bring more luck.[5]

Quotes

Tristifer Botley had filled out since last she'd seen him, but he had the same unruly hair that she remembered, and eyes as large and trusting as a seal's. Sweet eyes, truly.[13]

—thoughts of Asha Greyjoy

Farther down the docks she came on Tagganaro sitting with his back against a piling, next to Casso, King of Seals. He bought some mussels from her, and Casso barked and let her shake his flipper.[21]

—thoughts of Arya Stark

Tristifer: Where will Your Grace find subjects for her kingdom if the northmen let you have it? Or do you mean to rule over a realm of seals and otters?
Asha: Otters might be easier to rule than men, I grant you. And seals are smarter.[4]
