Lucas Harroway was the Lord of Harrenhal and the head of House Harroway during the reigns of kings Aenys I Targaryen and Maegor I Targaryen. He served as Hand of the King for Maegor I, his son-by-marriage.[2]
History
During the reign of King Aenys I Targaryen, Lucas was named the Lord of Harrenhal after the violent death of Lord Gargon Qoherys in 37 AC.[3] In 39 AC, he saw his daughter Lady Alys wed to Prince Maegor Targaryen in a Valyrian wedding ceremony on Dragonstone. As Maegor was already married to Lady Ceryse Hightower, the High Septon denounced the marriage as "sin and fornication" and condemning Alys as the "this whore of Harroway". Pious lords across the realm began to turn against the crown and in a fruitless effort to pacify the Faith, Aenys exiled Maegor and Alys to Pentos.[4]
Aenys further exacerbated the situation in 41 AC by incestuously wedding his daughter Princess Rhaena, to his son and heir, Prince Aegon. The young couple embarked on a royal progress across the realm and upon reaching Harrenhal, Lord Lucas refused to admit them to his castle unless they agreed to acknowledge his daughter as Maegor's true and lawful wife. Aegon and Rhaena refused and were forced to spend a cold night in tents beneath Harrenhal. Aenys died the following year and Maegor claimed the Iron Throne, making Alys queen.[4]
In 43 AC, Lucas was named Hand of the King by Maegor, but it was said that Lucas did not have the ear of the king, who was instead ruled by Alys and his third wife, Queen Tyanna of the Tower, and his mother, Queen Dowager Visenya Targaryen.[4] When Prince Aegon attempted to claim the crown from his uncle, Lucas raised his levies from Harrenhal and joined Lord Tully in support of Maegor, advancing on Prince Aegon's host from the north. In the resulting Battle Beneath the Gods Eye, Aegon was slain by Maegor, securing the king's place on the Iron Throne.[3][4] While Maegor focused on the completion of the construction of the Red Keep, Lucas was left to govern the realm for a while.[2]
In 44 AC, after Alys had a stillborn, monstrously deformed baby, Queen Tyanna convinced Maegor that the boy had not been of his seed, but the result of one of Alys's many affairs, and that Lord Lucas himself had helped his daughter conceive a son for the king by sending men of proven fertility to her chambers. Tyanna provided the names of the men she had supposedly been sleeping with, with one man found with gold paid to him by Lord Harroway. The questioning and torture was done in secret and swiftly so the Harroways had no inkling of the king's suspicions until the Kingsguard was dispatched to seize the Harroways. Alys was taken and tortured to death, while Lord Harroway's children, brothers, and nephews at King's Landing were executed. Lucas himself was thrown from the roof of the Tower of the Hand by knights of the Kingsguard, while he was inspecting the tower's construction.[N 1] Maegor then marched upon Harrenhal, held by his unsuspecting nephew, and Lord Harroway's Town, and executed every man, woman, and child with a drop of Harroway blood, thus completing the destruction of House Harroway.[2][4]
Family
Lucas Harroway was the father of Lady Alys Harroway, the second queen to Maegor I Targaryen, and her two sisters, Jeyne and Hanna Harroway, as well as the father to several sons. Lucas also had several brothers and nephews by them, including the castellan of Harrenhal while he served at court in King's Landing. He was a kinsman of an unspecified degree to Horas Harroway.[4]
