The title of Storm King was held by the ancient Durrandon kings, who ruled the Kingdom of the Storm,[1] most of which is now the stormlands and at one point included the riverlands, the crownlands, and the eastern part of the Reach.
History

[edit]The first of the line was Durran Godsgrief, who according to legends built Storm's End and won the love of Elenei, the daughter of the sea god and the goddess of the wind.[2]
The Storm Kings established a powerful kingdom, and the Durrandons extended their control north to Massey's Hook[3] and the Bay of Crabs,[4] west into the Dornish Marches,[5] and south to Cape Wrath.[4]
During the reign of King Arlan III Durrandon, the stormlands claimed the riverlands after the downfall of House Teague.[6] King Arrec Durrandon was defeated by Harwyn Hoare, King of the Iron Islands, in the battle at Fairmarket, ending three centuries of Storm King rule over the Trident.[6]
Argilac the Arrogant
[edit]During the Century of Blood, the militant tigers of Volantis attacked Tyrosh after taking Lys and Myr. The Storm King Argilac Durrandon joined the Sealord of Braavos and Aegon Targaryen, Lord of Dragonstone, in aiding Pentos in Tyrosh's defense, however, allowing Lys and Myr to rebel.[7] Argilac defeated a Volantene host in the Disputed Lands which was attempting to retake Myr.[8]
The last Storm King, Argilac the Arrogant, was slain in the Last Storm by Orys Baratheon. Argella Durrandon declared herself Storm Queen after her father's death, but the men of Storm's End turned her over to Orys's camp.[4] Orys wed Argella and took Argilac's colors and words as his own during Aegon's Conquest, founding House Baratheon.[9] King Aegon granted Storm's End to Orys and named him Lord Paramount of the Stormlands.[5]
The Laughing Storm
[edit]Prince Duncan Targaryen married Jenny of Oldstones, breaking his betrothal with the daughter of Lyonel Baratheon, Lord of Storm's End. The outraged Lyonel renounced his fealty to the Iron Throne and declared himself Storm King. A short and bloody rebellion followed, which ended when Lyonel, the Laughing Storm, yielded to Ser Duncan the Tall of the Kingsguard during a trial by battle.[10][11]
