The captain of the ship,[1] or master of the ship,[2] is the commanding officer of a ship.

About

Ship captains are usually men, but can also be women; for instance, Asha Greyjoy captains her own ship, Black Wind,[1] and has the devotion of her crew, who take a perverse pride in the deeds of their female captain.[3]

Culture

The ironborn captains are proud and willful,[1] and are considered to be kings aboard their own ships.[4][5] The ironborn also have the Iron Fleet, which is commanded by the Lord Captain of the Iron Fleet.[6]

History

Elissa Farman captained both the Maiden's Fancy[7] and Sun Chaser, assembling a crew for the latter ship in Oldtown in 56 AC for her voyage across the Sunset Sea, as she had believed since childhood that undiscovered lands existed west of Westeros, with Ser Eustace and Ser Norman Hightower also pledging their ships, Lady Meredith and Autumn Moon, to her voyage.[8]

Bryan of Oldtown was a merchant-adventurer and a ship captain who once journeyed through the Shivering Sea.[9]

Corlys Velaryon became a captain himself at the age of sixteen, when he sailed the Cod Queen from Driftmark to Dragonstone and back.[10] He later captained Ice Wolf beyond the Wall, but was unsuccessful in finding a northerly route in the Shivering Sea around Westeros. Corlys then sailed aboard his Sea Snake, a ship he designed and built, on nine great voyages to Essos.[10]

In 131 AC, Racallio Ryndoon, a devious Tyroshi captain-general, declared himself King of the Narrow Sea.[11]

Tristimun was a knight who commanded the sea watch during the reign of King Aerys II Targaryen, the Mad King.[12] Captaining Cobblecat, Roro Uhoris once sailed past the Wall to trade arms to wildlings, but he was then caught by the Night's Watch fleet from Eastwatch-by-the-sea, where he was executed for trading weapons to wildlings.[13][14]

Prince Oberyn Martell had Sarella Sand with the captain of the Feathered Kiss.[15]

Balon Greyjoy captained his own longship by seventeen in the mid-270 AC,[16] while his younger brother Victarion Greyjoy, the master of the Iron Victory, is the Lord Captain of the Iron Fleet.[17]

Captaining Storm Dancer, Moreo Tumitis took Catelyn Stark and Ser Rodrik Cassel from the White Harbor to King's Landing.[18]

While at Seagard, Theon Greyjoy hired the captain of the Myraham to bring him back to Iron Islands, which he reluctantly agrees. During his journey home, Theon sleeps with the captain's daughter, who wants to be his salt wife.[1]

Victarion Greyjoy leads the Iron Fleet in capturing Moat Cailin.[6][19]

In anticipation of the Battle of the Blackwater, Stannis Baratheon grants the title of Lord High Captain to Imry Florent, who is made admiral of Stannis' fleet,[14] which also consists of Davos Seaworth, captain of the Black Betha, and his sons Allard and Dale, captains of the Lady Marya and Wraith,[20] as well as Salladhor Saan, a notorious Lysene pirate and captain. Only Davos and Salladhor survived the battle.[12] The captains of the River Arrow, Prince Aemon, and Wildwind and their ships are among the few from King Joffrey I Baratheon's fleet that survived the battle, so he is honored by the Iron Throne.[21]

Ternesio Terys, the captain of the Titan's Daughter, offers a cabin to Arya Stark after she says the phrase "Valar morghulis" as Jaqen had taught her.[22]

During a night of drinking, Taena of Myr admits to Cersei Lannister that she had a secret lover, a Myrish captain with a scar on his face.[23]

When Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne attempt to book passage on the Gulltown Girl at Maidenpool, the master of the ship refuses them because he believes Brienne to be a whore and he claims his ship is no bawdy house.[2]

During the taking of the Shields, Victarion Greyjoy, Lord Captain of the Iron Fleet, rams Ser Talbert Serry's smaller ship with Iron Victory. Once the Serry ship is captured, Victarion gives command of it to Ragnor Pyke.[24]

Euron Greyjoy is captain of the Silence, a ship crewed entirely by mutes whose tongues he ripped out.[25]

Tyrion Lannister hears about Lady Korra, a female pirate and the captain of the Hag's Teeth, which is supposedly crewed by beautiful young maids who geld every man they capture.[26]

A Dance with Dragons

During a storm, the captain of the Selaesori Qhoran, which is taking Tyrion Lannister, Jorah Mormont and Penny from Volantis to Qarth, is thrown from the stern-castle to the main deck, breaking both legs as a result, dying from his injuries the following day.[27]

Captaining Talon, Cotter sails from Eastwatch towards Hardhome with eleven ships by the command of Lord Commander Snow.[28]

On their way towards Meereen, Victarion's Iron Fleet captures Ghiscari Dawn, as well as two galleys, with all three of its captains claiming that Daenerys has died, so Victarion has the first one drowned as a sacrifice to the Drowned God, and the latter two beheaded.[29]
