The sand steed is a type of horse bred in Dorne.

The horse is marked by its long neck, narrow head and its slimness and swiftness.[1] They have narrow, beautiful heads. Some sand steed colors are red, golden, black and pale as snow.[2]
They are smaller than normal warhorses and cannot bear the weight of the armor a warhorse usually wears. Dornishmen claim the mounts are able to run for a day and night and another day, and never tire.[2][3]
In The Conquest of Dorne King Daeron I Targaryen remarked that the Dornish love their sand steeds equal to their children, and wrote that the Knight of Spottswood had his sand steeds stabled in his very own hall.[4]
History
[edit]In his youth, Ser Glendon Flowers worked in the stable of the Pussywillows. He would occasionally sneak off to ride the patrons' horses, including Dornish sand steeds.[5]

Prince Oberyn Martell is riding a stallion black as sin with a mane and tail the colour of fire when he arrives in King's Landing.[2]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]Nymeria Sand rides a golden sand steed to meet her uncle, Prince Doran Martell, en route from the Water Gardens to Sunspear.[6] Tyene Sand works on an embroidery of Oberyn armored in red atop a sand steed.[6]
