Culture
Shepherds herd their sheep with sheepdogs.[1]
Wool is frequently used in clothing,[2] especially in Westeros.[3] Wool is an important part of the northern economy,[4] and White Harbor has a warehouse full of sheepskins.[5] Free folk use sheepskin for jerkins,[6] helms,[7] and cloaks.[8] Sheepskin has been worn by northmen[9] and lambskin by crannogmen.[10] Sheepskin can be used for maps[11][12][13] and scrolls.[14][15]
Lamb and mutton are commonly eaten throughout the known world.[10][6][16][17][18]
The arms of House Stokeworth depict a white lamb.[19] Lambswold is found in the riverlands,[20] and the Sheepshead Hills are located in the north.[13] House Umber graze their sheep in the high meadows of the northern mountains in summer.[21] Dothraki refer to the peaceful Lhazareen as Lamb Men.[22]
A ram is included in the arms of House Rambton.[23] Ramsford[24] and Ramsgate[13] are settlements in the riverlands and the north, respectively, and Ramshead is a ship of the royal fleet.[25]
Ironborn use thralls to tend their goats and sheep.[26] Harrag Sharp is known as Harrag Sheepstealer.[27]
Oznak zo Pahl styles his hair into two great curling ram's horns.[16]
A battering ram is a siege engine used against gates and fortifications.[28] Ships are often equipped with rams as well;[29] Great Kraken, for instance, has a grey iron ram in the shape of a kraken.[26]
History
Legend claims that Corlos discovered gold in Casterly Rock after tracking a lion which had been hunting sheep.[30]
During the First Dornish War, the vanguard of King Aegon I Targaryen was barred in the high passes of the Red Mountains by a wall of rotting sheep carcasses.[31]
Sheepstealer was a dragon during the Dance of the Dragons with a taste for mutton.[32] Nettles left out a freshly-killed sheep for the dragon every morning, causing Sheepstealer to grow accustomed to her presence and eventually allow her to mount him.[32] When Nettles and Prince Daemon Targaryen departed each other, the girl slew a black ram and fed the animal to Sheepstealer before flying away from Maidenpool.[33]
Rohanne Webber, Lady of Coldmoat, had five hundred head of black-nosed sheep.[34]
Ser Goodwin had Brienne Tarth slaughter lambs and suckling pigs in an effort to toughen the girl.[35]

A Game of Thrones
Viserys Targaryen alleges that Dothraki men sleep with sheep;[36] the same is also claimed of the Lhazareen by the Dothraki Quaro.[37] The khalasar of Khal Ogo kill thousands of sheep during their attack on a Lhazarene town.[37] To treat Drogo's wound, Mirri Maz Duur creates a poultice of firepod and sting-me-not and binds it in a lambskin. The khal removes the poultice, however, and the wound festers.[38]

Gilly reveals to Jon Snow that Craster has been giving sheep to the gods.[6]
A Storm of Swords
Herds of sheep are part of the free folk host gathered by Mance Rayder.[39]
Thoros of Myr gives three sheep to Lady Ravella Smallwood when the brotherhood without banners stop by Acorn Hall.[40] The Mad Huntsman brings a flock of sheep to Stoney Sept.[1]
Kella minds the sheep at the tower of House Baelish.[41]
Lord Walder Frey mocks his son Merrett as Merrett Muttonhead.[42]

Marwyn refers to the other archmaesters of the Citadel as grey sheep.[43][44]
A Dance with Dragons
While Reznak mo Reznak claims that they are sheep bones, Daenerys Targaryen recognizes that they are the bones of a child.[3]
Arya Stark has a dream of Nymeria's pack of wolves attacking a flock of sheep.[45]
Ser Jorah Mormont claims a greathelm sporting ram's horns, one of which is broken, from the armament of the Second Sons.[15]
Rams are one of the animals depicted in the masks of the Brazen Beasts.[46] The Red Lamb is a former slave in Meereen training to become a knight with Ser Barristan Selmy.[47] After Rhaegal and Viserion escape from the Great Pyramid, a thousand sheep are herded into Daznak's Pit for the dragons to feed upon.[48]
