Westermen

Westermen^[1] are natives of the westerlands, a western region of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.

Ethnicity

The westerlands were settled in antiquity by the First Men, who drove out giants and children of the forest and established numerous petty kingdoms in the region.^[2] The most powerful of them were the Kings of the Rock, House Lannister of Casterly Rock. Rather than oppose the coming of the Andals to the west, the Lannister kings arranged marriages with Andals and integrated the powerful newcomers into their realm. When King Gerold III Lannister died without male issue, a council crowned his daughter's husband, Ser Joffrey Lydden, who became the first Andal King of the Rock, Joffrey Lannister.^[2]

Culture

Religion

Brought to Westeros by the Andals,^[3] the Faith of the Seven is the predominant religion in the westerlands.^[4] Lannisport has a great motherhouse.^[5]

Customs

The westerlands are known for their deposits of gold and silver, with Casterly Rock having the richest gold mines in the known world.^[2] Wealthy Lannisport^[2] is renowned for its goldwork and goldsmiths.^[6]^[7]

Westermen and rivermen of yore referred to the ironborn as "wolves of the sea",^[8] and the Farmans of Fair Isle are famous for their hatred of the ironmen.^[2]

The customary surname of bastards of noble origin born in the westerlands is Hill.^[9]
